After completing an intensive 3 year classical culinary apprenticeship at the restaurant Foerenhof in Garmisch, Partenkirchen, Germany, Herbert Barnsteiner spent the next 8 years gaining extensive culinary experience in some of Europe’s top restaurants and hotels in Switzerland and Germany including a 2-star Michelin restaurant in The Black Forest, Hotel Bareiss.
After immigrating to Canada in 1988, Herbert held top positions starting at Movenpick York st. (Head-Chef 88’-94’) then onto trendy Acqua. After Acqua, Herbert worked 4 years with the Oliver/Bonacini Group becoming Executive Chef for 2 years with popular Jump restaurant.
Following Jump, Herbert and his wife Michelle made a decision to give Herbert a stage for his culinary talents and open up their own restaurant.
Herbert and Michelle opened up the Corner House July 5, 1999.
With Michelle running the front of house, corporate, special events and marketing, and of course Herbert doing his wonders in the kitchen… they had a powerful jump-start and created a very unique and loyal following which blossomed into a beautiful 15 year run.
Herbert and Michelle decided to take a well deserved break and after a lengthy journey, finally landed at the corner of Yonge st and 1 Balmoral Ave opening “BARNSTEINER’S”

With the passion she has for the “LIVE” audience…BARNSTEINER’S is now her new stage.
While being bustling restaurateur’s, Herbert and Michelle have brought up 2 wonderful sons, Gabriel and Julian…and have always made sure they intertwine their talents wherever possible.
Still, even today, at age 16 and 18, they are amazed how much they can eat, and letting them know, just minutes after eating a 4 course meal, ..… “were still hungry” !
When you enter Barnsteiner’s, you will be surrounded with a colourful rustic/chic environment and intertwined with a California – New York vibe.
Once you step inside, you will be embraced with a complete open concept, in full view of Chef Herbert Barnsteiner swirling around his new kitchen and Michelle bustling around the newly renovated dining rooms, bar and private room.
There’s a strong presence on their “hands on approach” towards the floor and kitchen, which Michelle and Herbert are so well known for.
Chef Barnsteiner has always believed in supporting local products from sustainable farmers with ingredients changing with the seasons.
There’s no cutting corners in this kitchen. The kitchen is consistent with wholesome, fresh product and surrounded with integrity, passion and honest food.
The flavours of Barnsteiner’s are accented by the Central European flare and the excitement of intense combinations.
The menu is quite varied with 30 plus items to choose… for a big appetite or a glass of wine and a nibble.
Michelle and Herbert are so excited to finally share there new spot with the entire neighbourhood and Toronto.
